In 1998 I desired to travel to Eurovespa from Finland with my Wife.
Having studied the small PAV single wheel trailer I decided it would be better to build my own with a proper 10” wheel.
I was working at the time for Valmet Paper Machinery, now Metso and had a complete fabrication shop with all access after hours.
Timo M. gave me all the scooter parts I would need,

with the exception of the trim on the sidepanels-which I purchased repro's from the UK.
I carried the Lambretta tail half thru HKI,on vappu so nobody noticed.and onto the train


First an old Lambretta frame was cut down the middle.
and widened to match the width of the PX200. The door and frame was carefully removed and re-installed. All welds were ground smooth.
Now for the top opening,
I then carefully opened the top and flaired the edges uding a peen hammer and a dolly,
The new Large lid was fabricated from Aluminum sheet, again the edge was flaired.


the top hinge was made from 2 industrial hinges and billet aluminum.
I put this aside and then moved on the the business end of the trailer.
the next step was to start on the suspension.
Timo donated me N.O.S. Rear fender, hub and rim from Lambretta Vega.
Well at work we had stainless and mild steel pipe, the choice of material was difficult to make....
The suspension ”U” was made and the dropouts and links were attached,

I wanted the suspension to be adjustable and with bump-stops. All the bushings are standard Lambretta parts.
the yellow springs were off the shelf parts from work.






The frame tube was bent next, and then carefully aligned with the rear swing arm.
At the same time I started working on the Vespa end, I wanted the hitch part to look smooth and un-noticable when the trailer was not being used, I cut and rolled the stainless and welded it up over a few days, again Lambretta bushings were used in the pivot.
I even decided to make extra mount points if I ever wanted to mount a rack to it.


Finnish Law says that if the trailer is bolted on it becomes part of the vehicle-like a sidecar so a bolt was fabricated-it also has a T handle to unbolt it faster.
Slowly the concept was coming together and the deadline for Eurovespa departure nearer.
As this was built for taking long journeys I needed to carry more 2-stroke oil, the front storage area was made from aluminum to exactly hold 5 one-litre containers,

One of the most difficult tasks was making the bulkhead and the floor, I chose to use 6mm lightweight film covered structural birch plywood filmivanerias is used in cargo vehicles.
The old glovebox area now serves as the technical area, there is stored tools, spares and the small stove and cooking pans.
The large back area is for everything else that must stay dry.
the original key locks the front storage area, and inside is the catch to open the top hatch.
The Racks were also hand fabricated from Stainless, to carry tents and bedrolls.



The trailer was then dis assembled and sent over to the paint shop,
It was painted with industrial 2 component paint, the color choices were slim but It turned out great.
Eventually came the day I wheeled in my scooter and after carefull alignment between the trailer and the scooter the final welds were completed.


The Manager of the Factory strolled up to me the following day and asked me about my evening work, I was hesatent at first but he was very impressed.
My wife even made the matching registration plate

When I took it for the first ride I was suprised to feel almost no change in handling.
On the weekend I started loading up weight and more test drives with complete sucess.




The following week we loaded up all the camping gear,wifes shoes and cloths-40 kilos worth and headed off to the ferry to sweden.



I learned quickly how dangerous front racks are when a sidewind caught us,
and we repacked on the side of the road.

Now in good trim the kilometers flew by, but with the headwind and rain Sweden was quite miserable.
After 2 days we were in germany and without the wind we could cruise at 100+ kmh with no problems at all, We even hit 120 on a nice smooth road coming into Gronining.


The trip back through Sweden was far more pleasurable as we were in no hurry.
The trailer was far better then expected,


The Vespa is far more stable with the trailer then without, We were less effected by crosswinds, and our fuel economy was not so much effected as the trailer sits in the slipstream. All loaded down there is a bit more effort needed on the brakes but 2-up and loaded this was expected.

I used this trailer for many years. I still have it if anyone is interested in it, it is one of a kind and deserves to get out on the road and go touring again.

It would take a professional welder over 16 hours to make this frame alone. he charges 60€/hr

That is a great story indeed and an extremely nice trailer. If I only had the extra money! Thanks for sharing and good luck with the selling.

a parts washing machine
full set vespa tools
metalwork on 2 scooters

rebuilt my bench vice
hey-winters are too long!

Nämä sivuposket on muuten mun ensimmäisestä lambretasta(josta kaikki alkoi)ostin sen romikselta Lahdesta hintaa 600markkaa.Vuosi oli joku 87..
 Mukavaa että ne tulee takaisin pasilaan ;D

Jos ton Mod-Elviksen tuntee oikein niin se vois olla kiinnostunut vaihtaa takaisin noi posket. Tietenkin maalauttaa vaihtoposket kärrynomistajan haluamaan väriin jos ei S-type brg ole mieleen.

Taatusti neuvottelu kysymys..
 Muistaaksein Mike laittoi noi posket kiinni sikafleksilla..eli helppo vaihtaa..
